SOLOMON Water has awarded a $63million (USD7.8m) contract to a New Zealand based engineering and construction company – Pacific Engineering Projects Ltd (PEP).
A statement from Solomon Water today (Tuesday 31st May) said the contract is for the construction of 11km of three new potable water trunk mains in Honiara.
The three new trunk mains are:
- Kongulai to White River to Town Ground (6km long).
- East Kola to Kukum Highway (1.8km long).
- Panatina to Burns Creek (3.2km long).
Solomon Water Chief Executive Officer Ian Gooden said this is another of Solomon Water’s critical water infrastructure projects for Honiara and he is pleased that they are able to award this contract this year.
“Trunk mains are our main water transporting network, delivering large volumes of water between the source and reservoirs.
“This project will construct new mains that will increase our network’s transfer capacity across Honiara,” Mr Gooden said.
He said together with the new Kongulai water treatment plant and the three large new reservoirs this trunk main project will help make Honiara’s water supply system and capabilities much more secure and should significantly minimise any disruptions due to rain or other network problems.
Solomon Water said the project will start on 16th June and will run for 18months.
It urged motorists and pedestrians to take care when travelling through these construction sites on the roads and footpaths.
“..stay alert, take notice of any traffic signage and or traffic control personnel whom may be there to assist you in staying safe,” Solomon Water said.
The project is funded by the Asian Development Bank and World Bank.
