RESIDENTS of Ngossi Valley community in West Honiara yesterday came together to celebrate the country’s 44th Independence anniversary with a colorful programme that kicked off with a parade.
Hundreds of community members took part in the event.
The residents were seen parading in national colours, hoisting a national flag and singing the national anthem before proceeding with other activities.
Chairman of the Ngossi Valley Ramcey Olisukulu thanked everyone in the community for attending the event.
“What a wonderful opportunity it is to bring the community together to celebrate our Independence Day.
“It’s a special day for all of us as we look at where our nation has come from, from the very beginning to now.”
Mr Olisukulu said Ngossi Valley is a vibrant community known for its peaceful, safe and clean environment with its residents valuing and promoting the belief of working together in building a model community.
“Our community believes in the spirit of unity and togetherness and over the years has engaged in activities that encourage and promote a sense of belonging and responsibility to each other, the community and the nation,” he said.
He said to maintain this spirit, they usually organise different activities from monthly clean-ups, sports, police talk to health awareness and religious programmes.
“This year, we are organising this independence anniversary celebrations in a unique way with the Theme ‘IUMI TUGEDA, ONE COMMUNITY, ONE NATION, SOLOMON ISLANDS.
“This event is educational and is aimed at teaching our children and youths about their history to promote a sense of patriotism so they can grow up to be good citizens of this beautiful nation,” he said.
The celebrations concluded at night with a dinner, video flashback of the Independence Day, address by a guest of honour, speeches and cultural presentation from the different provinces of the country.
Ngossi Valley community comprises 100 households with a total population of 600 people and has a well-established committee responsible to overseeing all community activities.
