PRIME Minister, Manasseh Sogavre, has hailed the Solomon Islands Ports Authourity (SIPA) as a ‘fine example of how Solomon Islands can successfully enforce rules and laws if responsible authorities put their mind to their enforcement responsibilities and Solomon Islanders are compliant.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare made the accolade in his keynote address at the official opening of SIPA’s three main infrastructures which included the newly completed Entry Gate building, the Harbours and Enforcement building and the soon- to- be- constructed SBD$125-Million Domestic Terminal and plaza complex which is estimated to cost between SBD$35 to SBD$45-Million.
Prime Minister Sogavare said he was fascinated by SIPA’s ability to enforce rules within the domestic ports area, banning selling of bettle nut and smoking.
“Our country has rules but we are very slack in enforcing them,” he added.
The Prime Minister emphasised that SIPA has demonstrated that enforcement of rules is possible if everyone works together.
“I have heard many times that it is difficult to enforce our rules and laws because our people do not listen. However, SIPA has shown that this can be done.”
Prime Minister Sogavare added that it only takes will to enforce rules and laws and SIPA has demonstrated so.
On that note, he congratulated SIPA’s enforcement and security team for enforcing the State-Owned Enterprise’s rules so that the port premises are secure and safe for people.
The Prime Minister also commended the SIPA board, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), management and workers for their efforts, sacrifice and commitment to bring SIPA to where it is today.
He added that SIPA has demonstrated that working together is the key to move forward.
Prime Minister Sogavare challenged other government institutions and Solomon Islanders in general to emulate SIPA, adding that only by working together ‘we can move mountains.
