THE Honiara City Council (HCC) Lord Mayor, Eddie Siapu and his delegation arrived back in the country following a one-week study tour to the Christchurch City Council in New Zealand.
The delegation arrived back in Honiara last Saturday.
The one-week study tour was purposely designed to strengthen the governance, administration and operations of HCC.
“Pacific TA and Local Government organised and funded the study tour in New Zealand under a programme to strengthen local governments in the Pacific. This tour focused on Asset Management,” City Clerk, Justus Denni, explained.
The study tour included conversations with the Selwyn District Council and Christchurch City Council.
The City Clerk said Lord Mayor Siapu paid courtesy calls to the Mayor of Selwyn District Council and the Mayor of Christchurch City Council during which they discussed future technical exchanges.
“The New Zealand Local Government through Pacific TA has been working with the Suva City Council in Fiji and Port Vila City Council in Vanuatu for the past five years. Honiara City Council joined the programme in September 2022,” the City Clerk explained.
He said HCC stands to benefit from technical expertise in the areas of asset management, city planning, waste management, governance, strategic planning and financial management.
“The relationship we establish with Local Government New Zealand is destined to strengthen governance, administration and operations of Honiara City Council of which will eventually result in an improved and modern Honiara City,” Mr Denni further explained.
