THREE families who sought immunization for their newly born babies were lucky to escape after strong wind and waves smashed the makeshift house, they took shelter in at Lokuloku in Munda, Western province.
A strong wind and waves smashed the makeshift house just after they move out their belongings.
They were recently discharged from the Helena Goldie Hospital (HGH) and took shelter in the makeshift building when the incident occurred.
One of the victims, Miss Lyn Soapi told this paper in an interview that just as they move out their last belongings, the makeshift they took shelter in was smashed down.
Soapi said they took shelter in the makeshift while bringing their newborn babies to take immunization at the hospital.
People usually took shelter in the makeshift house while waiting to complete the immunization period before they could return to their villages.
“It was built purposely for those who seek medical services at the hospital.
“That’s why we went there to live.
“There were three of us who took shelter in the makeshift house after discharging from the hospital.
“During the heavy rain, the tide started coming and the strong winds starting battering.
“Fear for our safety, we packed our belongings and moved out quickly to a residence located nearby.
“We were lucky to escape as just as we move our last belongings the makeshift house, fell to the ground,” she said.
She said all the overhang trees on the seashore were pulled down by the huge waves and strong winds.
She added other houses that were located nearby were also affected by the bad weather.
Some of the houses are ready to fall while others were also smashed to the ground.
This paper asked them if the National Disaster Council (NDC) supplied any relief supplies to them, she said at this point of time they never received any assistance from NDC.
They are currently taking shelter at one of the nurse’s residences.
