WITH a profound sense of respect and through its cooperation with FSM or any other Pacific Island country, I am taking the liberty as a common Pacific islander to respond to your letter dated 9th March 2023.
The accusation of China of “political warfare” and “Grey Zone activities” is unfounded and baseless which is only on speculation and propaganda to advance self and geo-political interest. The letter is found to be without proof and is unfair, unjust and is condemned in the highest manner.
Again, let it be known that China and Pacific Islands Countries, including FSM, enjoyed long-lasting friendly exchanges and cooperation in diverse areas based on shared broad common interests in safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, upholding international equity and justice and promoting sustainable and resilient development. Therefore, through its cooperation with FSM or any other Pacific Island country, China is committed to deepening its comprehensive strategic partnership featuring mutual respect for joint development and a shared future. The same is a legal framework that guides China’s commitment and respect for each Pacific Islands country’s sovereignty. Therefore, the letter from such a figure of your calibre perfectly reflects being irresponsible and non-other than an exit strategy.
Your proposed exit strategy with Taiwan is a clear violation of the United Nations Resolution 2785 on the “One China Policy,” signed on 25th October 1971. Therefore, it is essential to uphold and respect international agreements such as the United Nations Resolution 2785 on the “One China Policy.” Any exit strategy that goes against this resolution would be a violation. It is not appropriate to take an Anglo-Saxon media-based approach in such matters and condemnation is warranted in all forms and manner.
China’s ongoing commitment to non-interference in the domestic politics of any Pacific Island Countries is a testament to its respect for their sovereignty. Its goal of fostering peace, stability, and economic advancement in the region is a positive step towards improving the lives of Pacific Islanders. As a result, China’s presence in the Pacific region can be seen as a potential source of support and assistance for these countries.
For mutual interest, common goals and a shared future, regardless of the challenges of time, China, together with Pacific Island Countries, will continue working and deepening areas of cooperation to secure a better future for the Pacific Islanders. These partnerships will foster stronger economic ties, promote sustainable development, and enhance cultural exchanges. By building on the existing foundation of cooperation, China and Pacific Island Countries can create a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
