THE effects of COVID-19 pandemic and Honiara 2021 November Riot are continuing to put pressure on service delivery for both the national government and provincial governments.
Deputy Prime Minister, Manasseh Maelanga, when speaking at the Isabel Province 2nd Appointed Day last Friday highlighted these challenges which he said keep putting pressure on the service delivery by both levels of government.
“Ladies and gentlemen, many of us are aware of the many challenges of past and present that continue to put pressure on both the national and provincial government to deliver services to our people especially in rural areas.
“Some of these challenges are driven by external forces, whilst others are self-inflicted.
“COVID-19 for example has affected the implementation of the government programme and service delivery at the provincial and rural areas.
“COVID-19 passed on to us from outside our borders.
“Political disturbance that resulted to November 2021 riot in Honiara was an example of our self-inflicted challenge.
“The effect of the riot has impacted negatively on our economy, which everyone, including Isabel Province, felt its negative consequences,” DPM Maelanga said.
DPM Maelanga added that pressure from the country’s high population growth is also another issue which puts pressure on service delivery.
“We must continue to plan ahead to accommodate our high population,” he added.
DPM Maelanga said the national government and relevant authorities are working hard to address these challenges.
“Regardless of these challenges, the national government remains committed to ensure it bounces back and continues with its aspiration to create a stronger and better country for our present and future generations.”
