LEADER of Opposition Hon Matthew Wale has acknowledged the Government’s move to ban single use plastics.
In a statement today, Hon Wale said the single use plastic regulation 2023 should include tough regulations for importers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and also litter bugs.
He said considerations to use alternatives that are more environmentally friendly should also be included.
“These are positive regulations but it needs to be enforced with clear and strict guidelines,” he said.
The Opposition Leader said it is not only single use plastics that are causing pollution around the country and that too must be taken into consideration.
Hon Wale said tough regulations should also be enforced for litterbugs who continue to show no care for the cleanliness of our city.
“Tough laws must be imposed to stop importing of plastics with clear and strict regulations as well as for companies, people and households that continue to dispose plastic waste to pollute the environment,” he said.
He said the Government should also start to invest more on the process of recuperating scrap or waste plastics and reprocessing the material into useful products.
Hon Wale said the ban of plastic should not only be an undertaking towards the pacific games in November but a long-term solution to the use of plastic in the country.
