CONTRACTORS working on the new Adventist GF Jones Memorial Church in the Western Provincial Capital, Gizo, are doing the final touches of work to the complex well ahead of its dedication next month.
This is despite the setback faced by the church following the theft of offerings and tithes worth over $50,000 last week.
Area Church Pastor (ACP) of Gizo SDA Island District, Pastor Vernon Peter, told the paper in an interview that part of the funds allocated for the preparation for the church opening was also stolen in the burglary incident on Tuesday 27 June.
But he said despite what happened, the members of the church are committed to completing the work required before the official dedication of the church.
“Despite the setback caused by the theft of funds, we are committed to completing the work for the August opening.”
He could not reveal the exact amount of money for the church dedication preparation that was stolen but said the money was to get some material for construction work during that week.
He said the date for the official opening is yet to be confirmed.
GF Jones church was built over the years and the members felt that it should be officially dedicated this year.
A visit by the paper to the church last week and early this week saw paintings being done to the walls and roofing. Final touches of work to the interior, including windows, is also undertaken.
A number of church members are working each day to complete the final touches of work.
Meanwhile, police investigation into the $50,000 theft is still ongoing.
A number of suspects have been apprehended.
