SOLOMON Islands national men’s U23, Solympics kicked off their OFC Olympic Qualifiers with a 3-0 over Vanuatu yesterday in New Zealand.
Solympics took a 1-0 lead in the first half before adding another two goals in the second half to seal victory.
Team captain Javin Wae got the scoring underway for Solympics, a 31st minute goal which was converted from a penalty kick.
Calvin Ohasio extended the lead in the 87th minute before captain Wae scored his brace to make it 3-0.
Coach Eddie Marahare commended his team for achieving their goal of kicking off the competition with a positive.
“I want to thank my boys for a great performance; we played well and worked hard to achieve our first win.
“The fast pace game was part of our game plan and I’m impressed the players executed the plan very well, especially in the midfield.
“It’s very important to start of any tournament with a win and secure our first three points.
“I want to thank the Vanuatu team for putting up a very strong challenge,” Marahare said.
In addition to the win, Solympics midfielder won the Man of the Match award.
Meanwhile group B’s other match saw Samoa beat Tonga also by 3-0.
Solomon Islands will take on Samoa for their second group match.
