A BRAWL broke out at Vonunu, Southeast Vella Constituency on Thursday last week between supporters of two candidates planning to contest in the upcoming National General Election.
Reports reaching Solomon Star Gizo stated that the brawl happened in one of the areas in Vonunu when supporters of two candidates clashed after heated exchange of words.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic.
They said argument flared with fists being thrown at each other leading to a series of physical confrontations.
The incident had left several people with minor injuries.
Local community leaders responded swiftly to disperse the crowd and helped restore order in the area.
The constituency is known for its passionate engagement in politics and constituents supporting different candidates contesting in the constituency often rivalry against each other when it comes to electing a candidate who will champion their aspirations and development initiatives.
Member of the Western Provincial Assembly for Ward 7 Rence Sore expressed deep concerned over the escalating political tensions within the constituency following the incident.
Mr Sore emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful electoral process.
”The incident has led to calls for candidates and their supporters to engage in a more civil and respectful campaign in the run-up to the NGE 2024,” MPA Sore said.
As the constituency continues to prepare for the NGE 2024, residents and political observers are hoping for a return to a more peaceful and constructive political discourse, enabling the electorate to make informed decisions on the future leadership of the region.
The current MP for Southeast Vella Constituency is Honourable Fredrick Kologeto.
Meanwhile, the National Biometric Voter Registration exercise which started on September 4th across the country is expected to end on Friday this week.
