THE Team Solomon Junior Weightlifters at the Oceania Youth, Junior & U23 championship in Apia, Samoa, has bagged a total of 5 gold medals and 1 silver.
At the beginning of the competitions Solomon Islands Lorah Maelosia scooped 3 gold medals.
Later in the competition another Team Solomon Junior Weightlifter Shirmara Wini who competed in the 59kg category snatched two more gold medals, taking Solomon Islands gold medal tally to 5.
The silver medal was won by Freeman Hale who competed in the 61kg category, further raising Solomon Islands general medal tally to 6 medals – 5 Gold Medal and 1 Silver.
Promising Solomon Islands weightlifting medal prospect Alex Lini did not manage to win any medals but the competition was an exposure for him, being the first international competition for him to attend.
The weightlifting team is expected to return to the country on Wednesday 11 October.
Solomon Islands Weightlifting Gold Medalist and Iron Lady Jenly Wini who refereed at the Oceania Youth, Junior & U23 Championship will travel on to Melbourne, Australia, for a five-week training in preparation for the 17th Pacific Games.
Wini will return to the country on the 5th of November for the Pacific Games.
The Solomon Islands Team Weightlifting looks very promising to win medals for the country in the upcoming Pacific Games.
Weightlifting accounted for half of Solomon Islands medal tally at the last Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, in 2019.
