A TEN-year-old grade 2 student took his own life on Thursday last week at his family home at New Mandra Village, Gizo, Western Province.
The shocking incident which took place around lunch time has left family members and relatives with many unanswered questions as to why a child so young could take such an action.
According to relatives, the boy who is part Gilbertise and Choiseul Province was at home with his mother. His brothers were away at the time of the incident.
Unknown to his mother, the boy slipped away from his mother’s sight. The mother only learnt of what happened when she was alerted by villagers.
Relatives said a little girl who was passing by the family house was the one who saw the boy’s body and alerted others.
“This discovery is really shocking for this tight-knit community,” one of the relatives said.
“We are still coming to terms with the loss and trying to comprehend the underlying circumstances that led to this tragic incident.”
Gizo Hospital Ambulance responded to the incident and rushed the boy to hospital but he was already dead.
The boy is a student at Titiana Primary School.
Meanwhile, it was highlighted that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support, even among the youngest members of society.
As the community comes to term with this shocking loss, many questions linger about the factors that may have contributed to this devastating incident.
