DESPITE the growing influence of geopolitical dynamics in the region, the Solomon Islands remains steadfast in its foreign policy principle of being ‘friends to all, enemy to none’.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele reaffirmed this during the inaugural ‘Meet the Press’ session of the Cabinet on Monday.
PM Manele emphasized that while geopolitics – competition for influence – present both challenges and opportunities, the government’s focus remains on capitalizing on the opportunities it provides, while effectively managing the challenges.
He reiterated that the conduct of foreign policy falls under the purview of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
“As a small country, our primary interest lies in development,” PM Manele stated. “No single partner can fully address our development needs and challenges. Therefore, it is logical for us to engage with all partners.”
He further stressed that, “Our foreign policy stance is rooted in the recognition that the development and domestic security needs of the Solomon Islands are multifaceted. Collaboration with various partners is essential.”
“While acknowledging the strategic and military interests of larger nations, our priority, as a Least Developing Country set to graduate in 2027, remains development.
“Amidst geopolitical rivalries, particularly evident in our region and beyond, our commitment to neutrality remains unwavering. We will continue to engage with all parties without taking sides,” PM Manele said.
PM Manele acknowledged the reality of geopolitical competition but reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining a balanced and inclusive approach in its international relations.
