THE Aligegeo Provincial Secondary School in Malaita Province celebrated its inaugural cultural day last Friday.
The event was part of a school initiative to encourage students to embrace their traditional cultures and identity and in turn preserve these norms that have long kept their communities together.
The theme for the program was ‘Embracing and Showcasing Our Traditional Culture.’
The event was attended by the Malaita Provincial Tourism Officer Sonia Fiumae, who was also a member of the judging panel.
Principal Alick Bebesi, in his speech at the occasion, emphasized that the cultural day is a vital component of the school’s programs as it allows students to showcase and appreciate their cultural heritage.
“Embracing our traditional cultures serves as a critical anchor to our identity and heritage,” Mr Bebesia stated.
He highlighted that the program helps students to value their cultures and instil in them the sense of identity and belonging.
Mr Bebesia said, further to allowing students to celebrate their local cultures, the event further allows students to be aware of and acknowledge the diverse cultures that exist beyond the school and their respective communities.
“It’s important to understand that preserving our culture does not mean disrespecting others. Rather, it ensures that our traditions are passed down from one generation to the next,” he added.
The school boss said, he believes that the talents, contributions and ideas gathered from the event will play a significant role in shaping the future of the cultural landscape in Malaita.
He extended his gratitude to the organizing committee for ensuring the staging and success of the event.
The event was also attended by the school’s stakeholders, including parents.
