THE Western provincial capital of Gizo has witnessed its inaugural Women’s Football Festival tournament this week.
All matches are being played at the JFK Stadium.
The event marks a significant milestone in the region’s sports history, celebrating and promoting women’s participation in football.
Only four teams are participating with players being picked from all the six zones playing together.
The players come from Vella, Marovo, Noro, Central Roviana, West Gizo and Gizo town.
Teams from other Zones Football Association (ZFA) are expected to join future events.
The tournament commenced with a vibrant parade inside JFK Sports field, by kicking of the first competition.
During the official opening, John Smith Pitabelama, President of the Western Football Association (WFA), expressed his enthusiasm in seeing women participating in the event.
“It is great to see our women and girls engaging in football development within the region.”
He emphasized the importance of showcasing skills and talent throughout the tournament, urging participants to uphold high football standards.
The WFA Chief also highlighted that being affiliated with the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) and the Western Football Association (WFA) underscores the national significance of the competition.
“Players must abide by the rules and conducts set by the WFA. Players must also and always listen and respect the decision made by the referees.”
He further encourages the players to play at their best ability and strength to shows true spirit of sportsmanship.
“The Women’s Football Festival is more than just a tournament; it is a celebration of women’s empowerment and the growing interest in football among women and girls in the Western Province,” Pitabelama added.
The festival is expected to inspire greater participation in sports and contribute to the development of women’s football in the region.
All the four teams are competing according to colours namely; green, red, white and maroon.
The first day of the competition saw Team Green- Noro and Team Red ending the match in a nil-all draw whilst second game yesterday saw Team white 0 and team Maroon 6 goals.
The tournament is expected to end Friday.
