Tandai Ward in Guadalcanal Province will head to the polls in a by-election scheduled for November to elect a new Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA).
In an Extra-Ordinary Gazette of the Provincial Assemblies and Honiara City Council Electoral Act 2023 issued today – Tuesday, 17th September, Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening (MPGIS) Wayne Ghemu announced Wednesday 13th November as date for the by-election.
“Under section 12(2) of the Provincial Assemblies and Honiara City Council Electoral Act 2023, I, Hon. Wayne Osopo Ghemu, acting on the advice of the Electoral Commission fix 13th November 2024 as the date of the by-election for Tandai Electoral Ward within Guadalcanal Province,” the gazetted notice reads.
The by-election becomes necessary following the death of former MPA for Tandai Ward Late Jerome Rava, pictured, on 1st August 2024.
He was elected following the first-ever joint national general election in April.
On 6th May 2024 he took his oath as MPA and was appointed as the Provincial Minister of Women, Youth and Sports.
Due to his poor health condition, he was reshuffled until his passing.
In May 6 about 20 newly elected members of the Guadalcanal Provincial Assembly were sworn in to represent their respective wards in the 10th Guadalcanal Provincial Assembly.
As leaders they have been entrusted with the responsibility of advocating for the needs and aspirations of their wards and will work collaboratively to address the pressing issues facing the province.
