SENTENCE for a former casino dealer convicted of stealing gaming chips from the Coral Sea Casino last year will be delivered on Monday, December 23.
Maddlyn Hamara, 28, faces sentencing for the charge of Larceny by Clerk.
Sentencing submissions and mitigation were made in court last week.
The prosecution relied on written submissions, while the defense highlighted key points from their submissions.
Hamara’s lawyer argued that her client, a former casino dealer, struggled to financially support her five-year-old daughter on her salary.
The defense also cited a relevant case authority, emphasising the importance of deterrence to hold individuals accountable for stealing from their employers.
The defense requested that the court consider rehabilitation as a principle, taking into account that the defendant is a young mother with a young child.
Hamara was terminated in 2023 following the incident, which occurred between July 15 and 19, 2023, at the Coral Sea Casino.
She stole a total of 14 chips, returning four that same evening. Hamara then converted the remaining 10 chips into cash, equivalent to $10,000.
The stolen chips belong to her former employer, the Coral Sea Casino, located in the Coral Sea Resort at Town Ground area, West Honiara.
Rochelle Palmer of Public Solicitor’s Office represents the defendant whilst Public Prosecutor Martha Mutukera is appearing for the Crown.
