THE Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has heightened its alert status as the tropical cyclone season continues, with warnings re-issued this week urging communities to remain vigilant.
The cyclone season typically spans from November to April and the NDMO has emphasised that the country is not yet out of danger.
In its latest advisory, the NDMO has called on residents to be proactive in the face of severe weather, which can bring heavy rainfall, landslides and potential flooding.
“Even cyclones categorised as low as Category 1 pose substantial risks, including property destruction, loss of life and disruptions to vital infrastructure.
“Communities are encouraged to prepare for the ongoing cyclone season,” an NDMO statement said.
“It is crucial that households take necessary precautions such as trimming trees near homes, securing loose objects and developing an emergency plan,” it added.
The NDMO also advised residents in flood-prone areas to consider evacuation as a precautionary measure.
It also emphasised the importance of citizens staying informed by keeping themselves up-to-date with weather updates and advisories.
“Safety is our top priority, and it is important for everyone to remain alert during this critical period,” the NDMO statement said.
“As the season progresses, the public is reminded of the importance of community resilience and preparedness to mitigate the impacts of severe weather events. The Solomon Islands Government continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
“For up-to-date information, residents can tune in to local media and follow the official social media channels of the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC).”
