ONGOING road upgrade works on the Noro-Munda Road have raised safety concerns amongst motorists, commuters and the general public over the potential risk of increased road accidents as the asphalt pavement process is in progress.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) has confirmed that asphalt pavement works on the road commenced on January 9.
This milestone is part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in Western Province under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Solomon Islands Government.
The upgrades aim to enhance road safety, resilience to extreme weather conditions, and accessibility for residents and businesses.
The pavement works cover the stretch from the Soltuna factory to the entrance of the Solomon Islands Ports Authority, replacing previously damaged roads with modern, durable surfaces.
As the asphalt pavement works are in progress, drivers and transport operators have been urged to exercise caution as this means uneven road surfaces and potential hazards.
A transport officer in Noro warned about the risks, stating, “The road upgrade is necessary, but the current conditions pose dangers, especially at night and during bad weather and drivers must slow down and stay alert.”
During the festive season, a number of minor accidents were reported due to slippery patches and loose gravel on the road.
Residents living along the road have also expressed concern about the possibility of more serious accidents if proper safety measures are not enforced.
Authorities have assured the public that roadworks are progressing as scheduled and measures are in place to minimise disruptions.
Drivers are reminded to prioritise safety by adhering to speed limits and staying vigilant.
Munda resident Bryan Vigo welcomed the road improvements, describing it as a great development for Noro and Munda.
“Once completed, it will improve transportation accessibility for businesses and the public,” he said.
He, however, cautioned that, “With better roads, we could see an increase in accidents. Therefore, drivers must remain mindful and follow traffic safety measures.”
As the asphalt pavement works continue, the public is encouraged to stay informed about the road condition and take necessary precautions to ensure safe travel.
