The Workers Union Solomon Islands (WUSI) urgently calls on the Government of Solomon Islands to revoke the international jetty status granted to Leroy Jetty and return all international port clearance activities to the Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA).
The outsourcing of clearance operations to Leroy Jetty poses a serious security risk and undermines the efficiency and integrity of their nation’s port operations.
SIPA has long been the cornerstone of maritime operations in the Solomon Islands, with its centralized customs and other services infrastructure and international terminal designed to ensure the highest standards of security, efficiency, and accountability.
The decision to outsource clearance activities to a private Leroy Jetty disrupts this centralized system, creating vulnerabilities that could compromise national security and the smooth functioning of our ports.
The Workers Union Solomon Islands is deeply concerned about the implications of this decision. SIPA’s monopoly on international port clearance is not merely a matter of operational convenience; it is a critical safeguard that ensures all customs and security protocols are consistently enforced.
By fragmenting these activities, the government risks creating gaps in oversight and control, which could be exploited by those seeking to bypass legal and regulatory frameworks.
Furthermore, awarding a private Jetty like Leroy Jetty, a government activity mandated to Ports Authority, undermines mandate, hard work and dedication of SIPA and its employees, who have been trained to handle international clearance activities with the utmost professionalism. This decision threatens job security and morale among workers, who are essential to maintaining the high standards of our port operations.
WUSI urges the government to reconsider this decision and prioritize the safety, security, and efficiency of their ports.
“We call for the immediate cancellation of Leroy Jetty’s international status and the return of all clearance activities to SIPA’s international terminal,” WUSI said.
Workers Union Solomon Islands stands ready to work with the government and all stakeholders to ensure that our ports remain secure, efficient, and capable of supporting the economic growth of our nation.
