KING George Sixth School Maths Teacher, Angela Asipara spoke of a need for National Maths competition.
Asipara who has been a Maths teacher for over 30 years suggested the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) can introduce National Maths competition for schools in the country.
She was speaking at Perch School in East Honiara when the school staged its Multiplication competition for primary level on Wednesday.
“Solomon Islands doesn’t have any National Mahths competition.
“It is a good idea for us to have National Maths competitions; maybe Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development can introduce that,” she said.
Asipara found out some students her students at KG VI School hated maths because they have poor foundation of maths subject. This made them to miss maths classes.
“A lot of Form 6 students in my class didn’t even build a math foundation. So, when it is Math class, they usually run away,” she added.
However, she likes the initiative that Perch Primary School had by introducing Multiplication competition in their school, especially in primary level.
“I like to comment on your program for today, it is a very good program because getting students involved in learning Maths at the primary level helps to establish a good foundation of mathematics.
“When you build a good Maths foundation, you will enjoy doing mathematics at a higher level,” she told the Perch Primary School students.
She encouraged Perch School to continue with the Maths competition in the future.
