THE 2024 festive season in Gizo, the provincial capital of Western Province, was a peaceful one, marking a joyful and harmonious conclusion of the year for the local community.
Families, churches and visitors alike came together in the spirit of unity and goodwill to commemorate the birth of Christ.
Most of the families either spent their Christmas day in Church or picnicking on the picturesque beaches. Some chose to spend theirs in their homes.
A noticeable sense of calm and order characterised the celebrations and accordingly, law enforcement officials reported no major incidents throughout the holiday period.
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in Gizo commended the public for their cooperation in ensuring a safe and trouble-free festive season.
“We are grateful to the Gizo community for their positive behavior during Christmas. The peaceful atmosphere was a reflection of everyone’s commitment to upholding the true meaning of the season,” a RSIPF spokesperson said.
“Its good that everyone in the community is behaving well and cooperating except for a few drunkards,” the officer added.
Churches across the town were filled to capacity as many attended the special Christmas services held.
Many congregations hosted vibrant nativity plays, carols and feasts, showcasing the community’s strong faith and the long-held tradition of Christmas feasting.
There were many tourists who flocked into Gizo and other parts of the Western Province for the festive season.
Local businesses and markets also played their part in spreading festive cheer. Vendors reported brisk sales of seasonal goods, from fresh produce to handcrafted gifts, while families enjoyed the availability of traditional food and local delicacies within Gizo town.
The main Gizo market was closed during Christmas day, but vendors displayed their goods outside on the main market pavement for sale.
For taxi drivers, many have expressed that their takings during Christmas was low as a limited number of people were in town.
“Most of the people went back to their respective homes and islands to spend the festive season.
“Nevertheless, there were some people drinking and enjoying their time in town as normal,” one of the taxi drivers said.
Last week, local popular artists like Cottssi, Alrick, Jegga were in Gizo to perform their gigs at the Gizo Hotel Bamboo Bar.
They were joined by Ghemu followed by Alabasta, Cottssi and Chelsie at the weekend.
These artists will perform their last live show at the Double A Club in Noro during the countdown for new year 2025.
One Gizo resident Mary Tuha, expressed her gratitude for the peaceful Christmas celebrations.
“This Christmas was a special one. We were able to gather as a family, enjoy the day, and reflect on the blessings of the year without any worries.”
As the New Year approaches, the peaceful Christmas celebrations in Gizo set a hopeful tone for 2025, reinforcing the values of unity, love and respect within the community.
