VARIOUS schools in Malaita have not properly commenced the 2020 academic year as more teachers have not reached their respective schools yet.
According to the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) school calendar, registration should begin on Monday 20th January and the academic year should begin on 27th January.
However, a visit to a few schools in the central region of Malaita has confirmed that there were no teachers on site.
This is one of contributing factors that parents believe had caused the delay for schools to commence normal classes.
In Addition to that, the Solomon Star was told that teachers who are posted to new schools this year are still waiting for transport arrangements from the Malaita Education Authority.
This means that if the authority delays the transportation of the teachers to their respective schools, this will affect the timing of classes next week.
A chairman of one of the schools in the central region of Malaita said he was expecting to see teachers arriving at the school this week.
However, he said since early this week there was no positive sign of teachers arriving.
“I am still waiting for the school principal and headmaster to arrive so that we can proceed with registration.”
“Parents have been to the school since early last week, enquiring for registration but I advised them that they will have to wait until those who are responsible arrived,” the school chairman said.
