THE Asian Development Bank (ABD) is supporting the Western Provincial Government (WPG) to address the ongoing challenges of landfill and solid waste management in Gizo, Munda and Noro.
Western Province Premier Billy Veo highlighted this at the opening of the Full Assembly Meeting on Monday 28th October.
“Through the assistance of the Asian Development Bank, we will soon be addressing our critical landfill issues in Noro/Munda and of course Gizo,” he said.
Premier Veo told the Assembly that the Lands Division has been tasked to identify additional two to three alternative landfill sites for Gizo since the current one has been saturated and has no room for expansion.
He said ADB is providing support to ensure solid waste management issues in the three populated centres are addressed.
“ADB has recognised our need and is providing the necessary financial resources and technical personnel to help us address not only our solid waste management issues but also the local planning schemes for Noro and Munda, to ensure there is orderly infrastructure development,” Premier Veo said.
Premier Veo said the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey (MLHS) Local Planning Scheme for Noro/Munda will be presented by representatives from MLHS and ADB on November 8 in Gizo.
“We are looking forward to that consultative session and hopefully finalize it for gazetting and subsequent implementation,” he said.
