Dear Editor – I am writing to raise awareness of the persistent issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in the Solomon Islands.
Despite the enactment of the Family Protection Act in 2014, which criminalizes domestic violence and provides mechanisms for victims to seek protection, enforcement remains weak, with cultural norms often prioritizing reconciliation over justice.
The Solomon Islands has one of the highest rates of GBV in the Pacific, with 64% of women aged 15-49 experiencing physical or sexual violence from a partner.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this issue, with more women seeking help amid economic stress and social isolation.
NGOs, churches, and international partners have made progress in raising awareness, but more government action and resources are needed to protect victims and change harmful cultural norms.
It is time to prioritize the safety and dignity of women in our communities by strengthening the enforcement of GBV laws and improving access to support services.
Sincerely,
Nidu Sanjani Liyanage
