THE Aimela tribe has welcomed the idea of building a monument at the historical site where the first Malaita Council was established.
Speaking during the unveiling of the newly built monument in remembrance of Ma’asina Ruru heroes, Aimela tribal representative the granddaughter of late Irobina said Aimela tribe has supported the construction of the monument.
Hellen said her late Grandfather, Irobina was the one who allowed the land at Aimela to house the Malaita Council after Ma’asina Ruru leaders negotiated with her Grandfather to build the first Malaita Council at Aimela.
She said Aimela was selected as headquarters of the Malaita Council.
“It remained the headquarters of Malaita for the next 26 years until 1978 when Solomon Islands gained its political independence.
“The headquarters was relocated to Auki where it still stands today,” Hellen said.
She then thanked the Malaita for Democracy (M4D) and those behind the idea to build a monument at Aimela in remembrance of the political history of Malaita.
With that, she said her tribe is proud to be part of the Malaita political history by allowing their tribal land to house the first Malaita Council in 1952.
