Work to upgrade and improve Honiara International Airport has started, Aviation minister Peter Shanel Agovaka says.
Japan, which funded the current terminal, is again funding the multi-million dollar upgrading work.
Agovaka told parliament his Permanent Secretary has just returned from Tokyo after signing the contract with the Kitano Construction Company, which won the bid to do the project.
He added the project will cost US$33.8 million, which will cover the main terminal building, as well as infrastructures for international arrival and departure and also for the domestic terminal.
“It is estimated that it will take 31 months to complete the project,” Agovaka said.
He said the upgraded airport project will be delivered by the 2nd of June 2022 just in time for the South Pacific Games in 2023.
“My ministry is working very hard to support the project and the contractor to ensure it completes on time.
“We are working very hard especially the aviation sector in my ministry. I am driving the ministry, ensuring that all workers pull their socks up,” he said.
