ALOTA’A community high school (ACHS) in Auki Malaita province has kicked off its poultry project this week.
The project was part of a plan to raising money for the school and its department.
In an interview with agriculture teacher madam Freda Ruka, she said that the idea for this poultry project is to produce chicken manure for the garden farm that started off few months ago.
“As stated that the school will not use any chemicals to the garden, so this is the only fertiliser that we’ill be using, the chicken manure,” she revealed.
She added that a part from that, the school is looking into erasing the idea of buying chickens from farmers which isa waste of time and money.
“We should farm our own chicken so that when it comes to function times, there’s no need to spend our money outside but spent it to the school farm so that the money won’t go out, but remain at school for it purposes,” Mrs Ruka stated.
She said that this was the main idea behind this poultry farm.
“Also it will help the agriculture students to learn about poultry in classes to go and see the chickens, how to raise them up, feed them and care for them from stage one until harvest time,” she said.
About 25 chicks have been bought in Honiara and will be raised over a period of time.
The number will increase as time goes on.
She urged the students to take good care of the chicks during their early stage.
