THE country’s new Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China His Excellency Barret Salato has assured Prime Minister Honorable Manasseh Sogavare that he will continue to build on the momentum of the Solomon Islands-China bilateral relations.
Ambassador Salato made the assurance when he paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister last Friday.
While admitting that the new role is a ‘big shoe to fill’, Ambassador Salato said he is prepared to serve to his utmost best.
He told the Prime Minister that one of his main priorities is to work on the trade protocols, gaining insights on the meticulous complexity of China’s trading opportunities.
Ambassador Salato further assured Prime Minister Sogavare that he would pursue matters of interest in trade, especially in the areas of fisheries and resources.
Prime Minister Sogavare told Ambassador Salato that Solomon Islands bilateral relationship with PRC has been momentous and that the right people are needed to drive the interests of the country.
He said with Ambassador Salato’s wealth of experience in trade diplomacy, he is equipped with all that it takes to fill the post left vacant after the passing in office of the former Ambassador Late John Moffat Fugui.
Prime Minister Sogavare added that the country’s outlook in the next five years is to delve into the productive and resource sectors.
He wished Ambassador Salato all the best, including God’s guidance to represent Solomon Islands interests above anything else.
Ambassador Salato and his family will leave for China today. He will be supported by a counsellor and possibility an additional staff.
