Two candidates are set to compete for the premier’s post of Malaita Province next Tuesday.
They are re-elected Member of the Provincial Assembly for Ward 11, Elijah Asilaua, and first-time member for Ward 29, Philip Kwato’o.
Both have expressed confidence ahead of the election and are prepared to lead the populous province if successful.
Asilaua is aligned with the faction known as Malaita Government for Redirection, which is poised to lead the government.
He told Solomon Star that he is confident and ready to lead and serve the province of Malaita.
Asilaua emphasized that the key focus areas of his administration include the continuation of ongoing projects proposed for Malaita and maintaining support for projects that are currently ready for implementation.
He reiterated his readiness to work closely with the national government to achieve the earmarked developments for the province.
On the other hand, Mr. Kwato’o, a mining engineer by profession, expressed his confidence and readiness to lead the Malaita provincial government should he assumes power.
He stated that he has garnered the support of MPAs who are now prepared to voice their views and support their people through the premier election.
Mr. Kwato’o shared his vision and plans to lead the province should he be elected, highlighting outstanding issues that the province faces and which need to be addressed by its leaders in terms of development.
“I am confident and ready to lead Malaita province as its premier,” Mr. Kwato’o affirmed.
Clark of Malaita Provincial Assembly, Wilson Anii, confirmed receiving the nomination of Asilaua yesterday.
He stated that the nomination process is open and will close on Monday, May 13, 2024.
Kwato’o, who is affiliated with former Premier Daniel Suidani’s camp at AM motel, is expected to submit his nomination before the election next week as their candidate for the premier election.
As of yesterday, the Asilaua camp claims the support of 21 MPAs in a new group known as Malaita Government for Direction.
Most of their supporting MPAs are newcomers.
