Solomon Islands Athletics Federation (SIAF) is set to host the Athletics National Championship (ANC) next Month in Honiara.
SIAF President Michael Kuali told Star Sport over the weekend that the championship is set to take place in Honiara from 17th to 20th September 2024.
“The upcoming ANC will be held from 17th to 20th of September 2024 in Honiara,” Kuali said.
Most of the provinces have been invited to be part of the championship, he added.
“With that, invitations have already been passed to the provinces and anyone who wish to join the championship,” Kuali added.
In the same note President Kuali said, this year’s championship will be an interesting one as compared to past athletic champions.
“This year’s championship is will be an interesting one with the including of under 16 (U16) and under 18 (U18) alongside the open category,” athletics boss said.
He said, the target to include youth catergory is to allow young runners participating along with the senior ones.
“The aim of the inclusion of youth category in the championship is to address the issue that young athletes are competing openly with the senior athletes that resulted in poor results for the younger athletes.
“So this time around we decided to included U16 and U18 category for both male and female in the championship”, President Kuali said.
President Kuali further added that those in the province who wish to part of the championship need to contact the federation.
He said, contacts are included in the invitation letters sent to the provinces.
Interested teams are urged to confirm their participation soon.
During the championship, the federation will also be conducting trainings for those who wish to undertake athletics coaching.
The workshop will be held on the 14th of September before the championship kicks off on the 17thof September.
“The training is basically for new ones who does not have the any level in terms of athletics coaching.”
The workshop is an opening stage for anyone who wishes to take athletics coaching including or any athlete who wish to have more understanding about the sport of athletics, President Kuali explained.
“To the athletics affiliation federation in the provinces please do send one or two participants for the training so that they will go back with the needed knowledge they learn and encourage others into athletics.”
Star Sport understands the championship is anticipated to be a tough one as athletes are preparing for it.
The championship will be held at the King George running tracks built by China.
