THE Solomon Island National Athletics championship 2022 competition successfully kicked off at the KG VI new running track, Thursday.
Day one of the three day’s competition started off with both the track and field events.
Thursday started off with the field events held at the Lawson Tama and followed by the track events later in the afternoon.
Field events include Javelin, Shot Put, and Discuss and the 100 meter and 400 metre heats, 800 meters and 5000m race for track events.
Events will continue with 200 metre heats before 200, 400, and 1500 metre finals.
Speaking during the opening of the competition yesterday, GOC representative Sara Gale said this competition will give the athletes a feel of what it will be like at the Pacific Games.
“This competition will give athletes a taste of what the 2023 pacific games will be like.
“We hope athletes will practice sportsmanship, respect for each other, make new friends and accept whatever the results,” she said.
The GOC hopes more athletic competitions will be held to help prepare athletes for the Pacific Games next year.
The new running track will also be used to host Para-athletics competitions.
