THE man who allegedly attempted to rape his 12-year-old niece last year has been released on bail yesterday in the Honiara Magistrates’ Court.
The court has granted him a $1,000 cash bail with strict bail conditions that restricted him to make contact with the victim or her family, to leave Honiara town boundary and he is to report to Naha Police Station twice a week.
The accused’s wife acted as his surety.
He will appear in court again on July 8, this year.
He is facing one count of attempted rape and three other counts of indecent assault.
Prosecution alleged that on Christmas Day last year he tried to rape his niece whilst accompanying her home.
The victim’s mother sent her back home from Honiara Central Market because the accused was allegedly acting disorderly at the market.
It was alleged he was under the influence of liquor and was armed with a fish hook (fishing boat hook).
He later allegedly pulled out a small kitchen knife and walked around in the market house.
Lappy Hite of Public Solicitor’s Office represents the accused.
