The Australian government is very proud to support the learning opportunity for Correctional Services of Solomon Islands, says DFAT Counselor for Justice and Governance in Solomon Islands, Ms Karryn Murray.
Murray highlighted this, when speaking at the Queensland Correctional Services Academy Certificate presentation for local CSSI officials who have successfully completed their studies lately.
The training, which will allow officers to strengthen the skills and knowledge of the officers, was well accredited by the Australian government representative.
“I admire your commitment to personal development though it can be a difficult to fit study in when you are working and trying to meet family commitments,” Murray said.
She added that, Australian is working together with CSSI to improve security for prisoner’s belongings, to better case management and has been supporting this through the Australian aid program to ensure the ideas are implemented.
The Counselor for Justice and Governance said that both countries have had a long history and close friendship with CSSI, and hope this will continue into the future.
“Australia supports CSSI because we believe that a strong and effective corrections system is necessary for Solomon Islanders to feel safe and to know there is well-functioning justice system.
“Australian will always support,” she added.
She further outlined that the Australian government is now assisting the country with advisers and volunteers (some of which are here).
They are now helping in areas such as management and rehabilitation, psychology, building staff housing at Auki and the Training Room here at Rove and refurbishing the Rove Gate Lodge.
According to Ms Murray, all the improvements will make a big difference to the professional look of Rove as staff and visitors arrive to sign in, and support to the amazing women officers Network.
This also includes an exciting new project called ‘Herstory’, which will be launched later this year.
Meanwhile, Murray also told the Graduants that they are the future leaders of CSSI and everybody are looking forward to seeing how the officers will continue to make CSSI an organisation which they can be proud of.
