THE multi-donor funded White River Market facility in West Honiara was officially opened on Monday and will open for business as of next Monday after all its furniture are set up for use by vendors.
This is the first proper marketing building to be established in White River and is funded by the Australian Government in partnership with the World Bank, Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the CAUSE (Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement) Project.
“This market building provides a space for local farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs to showcase their products and artwork. It will foster economic growth, create jobs and strengthen our sense of community.
“We are investing in our future by supporting local businesses and encouraging sustainable practices,” the Supervising Lord Mayor of Honiara City Council, Charles Aiwosuga said.
He said HCC has a policy of increasing and improving access by residents to markets within the city.
“This market will give vendors opportunity to earn some income for a decent and sustainable livelihood.
“The council believes that vendors’ access to a proper market building will reduce their dependence on other unwanted economic activities to earn an income.
“I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of Australia, the World Bank, Ministry of Infrastructure Development and CAUSE Project and everyone else who has contributed to this project.
“Your hard work and dedication have made this day possible,” he said.
He added that the White River Market is not just a place of commerce, but a symbol of community resilience and cooperation.
The Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Rod Hilton stated that Australia is a number one partner of Solomon Islands in terms of development and they are super excited to support this market project.
He stated that this market building will definitely support the rural women in vending their garden produce to earn money and meet the school fees of their children and other household expenses.
He said Australia is happy to support White River Community by funding their new brand market facility.
MID Permanent Secretary Allan Lilia said this market is more than just a place for commerce, adding that it is also a hub for community interaction.
A Local market vendor who has lived in the White River community for 16 years now, Jesinta Hahoe acknowledged those who were involved in accomplishing this ‘life-saving project.’
“I am grateful to the donors, government, HCC and everyone who contributed towards the accomplishment of this project,” she said.
She added that the market challenges faced by vendors who have been selling their goods at White River are now over and all women will enjoy selling their products in a proper market house.
