An Automatic hydrometric weather station was installed in Tingoa, West Rennell, UNDP officer in Rennell-Bellona Province confirmed to the Solomon Star.
The officer revealed that the Automatic hydrometric weather station is purposely to enhance Climate early warning system and disaster preparedness at the provincial level.
“The Automatic hydrometric weather station measures wind speed and wind direction, barometric pressure, rainfall, relative humidity, air temperature, and provides recording for ground water level, salinity (electrical conductivity), total dissolve solid (TDS) and water temperature,” he explained.
“Data collected from this Automatic hydrometric weather station will be communicated from the province via Inmarsat’s Bgan Internet Protocol (IP) Satellite and internet services to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) hosted NEON server in New Zealand, and automatically stored in the Solomon Islands Metrological Service (SIMS) Tideda-CliDE system,” the officer elaborated.
The data will be supplied separately to the existing server of the Water Resource Division (WRD) of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, he added.
He said this will enable WRD/SIMS to review and manage the raw data and use the data analysis, processing and graphical products featured in Tideda.
“And also deal with complexities particular to hydrometric data, such as flow gauging and rating curve development,” he concluded.
