TORRENTIAL rain has forced operations at the Gold Ridge mine to be suspended.
However, the company said yesterday all employees on site are safe.
“St Barbara is concerned for the welfare of people in communities near to the Gold Ridge mine, including but not limited to downstream of the tailings storage facility (TSF),” the company said in a statement.
“Near to the mine, a number of rivers are already in flood, roads are cut and land slips have occurred.
“We urgently recommend villagers evacuate to higher ground and safe positions.
“Unfortunately St Barbara employees themselves are isolated by the flood waters and are unable to assist at this time.”
Gold Ridge operates the country’s only gold mine in central Guadalcanal.
