THE public has been warned to be extra careful when visiting some of the beaches in North West Guadalcanal for recreational activities.
This followed a theft incident yesterday morning at the well-known Bonege beach.
Benjamin Afuga from Yumi TokTok Forum (YTTF) reported that on Sunday morning at around 8:30am two expat divers and a local instructor went to the Bonege beach.
“They parked their vehicle and went on to dive. Whilst they were busy diving, someone broke into their vehicle and stole a large amount of cash,” the report said.
It was further revealed this is not the first time for such incidences to occur at the Bonege beach.
“In 2018 someone raped an expat woman. After a long and difficult investigations the suspect was arrested and jailed.
“In 2019 the British High Commissioner’s vehicle was also broken into and thieves stole a drone, a laptop and a substantial amount of cash
“YTTF was reliably informed that people around the area are not helpful during Police investigations. This was because those residing within the vicinity and work as securities and beach keepers are the suspects themselves,” YTTF reported.
A question was also raised as to where were the securities who supposed to protect properties of users of the beach.
YTTF said the Guadalcanal Province and Police should take this matter very seriously and act immediately.
YTTF also raised question whether these beaches have business licences.
“The province must investigate the business owners.”
Meanwhile, YTTF said it is aware other people have raised similar cases not only about Bonege beach but other beaches as well.
“It is time owners raise their standards of facilities and on security of users and their properties.
“Honiara residents including expats usually go the beaches for recreational purposes and diving. They must be allowed to use the beaches freely.
“The North West side beaches are home to many top diving spots especially war relics.
“Users pay to enter and dive therefore owners should improve their services and look after users and their properties at all cost,” YTTF said.
