BED bugs are reported spreading like a plague in many parts of east Honiara.
Reports reaching this paper said the bug is rapidly spreading into residential homes in the eastern part of the city is increasingly becoming a concern to many residents.
The carnivorous blood sucking insect has been on the increase, invading many homes and causing discomfort to people who cannot sleep properly at night as result of bed bug bites.
According to the report, those residing at Kobito, Gilbert Camp, and Borderline, Adaliuwa, Green Valley, Mount Austin, Zion, Fulisango, Naha and other suburbs in Eastern side of Honiara are complaining about the spread of the insecticide bug..
The report stated that residents from the above suburbs are finding it difficult to sleep comfortably at night as result of stinging blood sucking bites by bud bugs during their sleep.
Residents from Burns Creek community, east Honiara, have also raised similar concerns about the discomfort caused to their sleeps by bed bugs.
Similar concerns have also been raised by the residents of Skyline area in central Honiara.
Many families whose homes have been invaded by the spread of bed bugs are confused as to how best to eradicate the insecticide since their efforts to rid it have failed.
Research reports indicated that each bedbug egg takes up to 10 days to hatch and another five to six weeks for the offspring to develop into an adult.
Evidence suggests that at normal room temperature, about 23 degrees Celsius, bedbugs can only survive two to three months without a blood meal.
Bed bugs are active at night and generally hide during the day. After mating, females lay white, oval eggs (1/16-inch long) into cracks and crevices.
An individual bed bug can lay 200-250 eggs in her lifetime. The eggs hatch within 6-10 days and the newly emerged bed bug nymphs seeking a blood meal.
You can pick up bed bugs almost anywhere — offices, stores, hotels and gyms for starters. They’re great at hiding and have been known to hitchhike in luggage, personal belongings or even you.
Once indoors, they can be very difficult to control without the help of an experienced pest specialist. You can reduce your chances of a costly bed bug infestation by catching them early.
To get rid of beg bug from your home without using of chemicals, you are advise to follow the simple measures listed below;
· Remove all mess from your home, which makes finding bed bugs easier.
· Wash and dry your bed linens on the hottest temperature permitted.
· Closely inspect any second-hand furniture before bringing it in your home.
· Inspect your home after moving, trips, service calls or overnight guests.
Bed bug, which is known scientifically as Cimex lectularius (Cimicidae), are small wingless insects that feed by hematophagy exclusively on the blood of warm blooded-animals and since humans are warm-blooded animals, we are ideal hosts for them.
