Local basketball coaches end FIBA certified training
Local basketball coaches from the Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF) have recently received FIBA certified coaching certificates after successfully completing FIBA level 1 coaching course.
Three of the recent certified local coaches shared insights about their achievement with Star Sport on Tuesday.
Augustine Basia
Augustine Basia is one of the well-known national basketball players in the country representing Solomon Islands in various basketball tournaments in Oceania including the 2023 pacific games in Honiara.
Basia even led the Honiara high school basketball teams and won double gold in the recent high school basketball championship that already proved himself as a coach. Pictured above is Basia with the Honiara High team members.
Basia told Star Sport that the FIBA course has been very practical and relevant for him as it aligns well with how basketball is played in our local leagues and beyond.
“Having coached at different levels including junior teams and senior local leagues, I found the course structured approach extremely useful.
“It provides clear insights into how the game is evolving, what skills is important, mental preparation, and what aspects of the game are outdated. Sharing these insights with other participants has been valuable,” Basia said.
He hopes this course will inspire him and other young coaches in the sport to continue teaching and promoting basketball in the country.
He added, its also encouraging to see young women taking part in this course, especially given the shortage of female coaches.
“Congratulations to Lema Tahani and Sharyce Chow for completing the program. I encourage more women to step into coaching roles,” Basia added.
Looking ahead, he plans to continue coaching whenever he can by balancing this with his career responsibilities.
“I hope to have the chance to coach our teams at a regional level someday,” Basia concluded.
Loremarose Taeta Tahani
Loremarose Teata Tahani led the Betikama basketball team during the recent high school basketball challenge.
She is one of the coaches who has been accredited as a FIBA certifies coach after completing FIBA level 1 coaching course.
Tahani said, she is super proud of herself for her achievement.
“Indeed, I am super proud of myself for having completed the FIBA level 1 coaching course.
“The course has built my confidence and gives me more ideas on basketball coaching,” Tahani said.
“During the course, she has learned so much important things that can boost her coaching carrier.
“From what I learn, it’s good that to teach the athletes to have a competitive mindset and ready to face challenges,” Ms Tahani said.
Tahani concluded by appealing to youths out there who has the passion is basketball to take up basketball coaching.
Shanyce Chow
Shanyce Chow is one of the participants who received the FIBA certified coaching certificates after successfully completing FIBA level 1 coaching course.
Chow told Star Sport that the course is very insightful and deepened her understanding in basketball.
“The course was insightful and deepened my understanding of basketball.
“It was well-structured and accessible, making it a great learning experience,” Chow said.
She went on to say that the her achievement as a certified FIBA level 1 coach is important for personal growth and it’s a way to better understand and appreciate the game.
Chow concluded by saying: “If you love basketball, consider coaching—even if it’s just to learn more about the game. It’s a rewarding experience.”
