An Australian businessman has donated four motor bikes to the Royal Solomon Islands Police (RSIP), Immigration Division, and the Honiara City Council law enforcement unit.
The donation came as part of a business partnership between Ian Watts and local businessman David Iro, who owns Willies Electrical and Solar Power.
Of the four bikes, one will be used by Honiara police, one for Guadalcanal police, while the other two are for Immigration and city council police.
Iro said the donation was part of their contribution to the community and people of Solomon Islands.
He said his business is community oriented so the donation is a gift of goodwill to ensure law and order are maintained in the community.
“I believe these bikes will help the police to effectively carry out their jobs,” Iro said.
He said the traffic congestion in Honiara is a major hindrance to the work of police, especially when they need to attend to an emergency.
“These bikes will ensure our police remain mobile even when our roads are congested.”
He urged the recipients to use the bikes well to serve the community.
City clerk Charles Kelly said the council was pleased to receive the bike.
“Mobility for our law enforcement officers is important when carrying out their duties,” Kelly said.
“This motor bike will help in that cause,” he added.
