THE Managing Director of BK Cocoa Exporter Blaise Kokou has ‘generously’ funded the Bonege and Vura Cocoa Rehabilitation Project in West Guadalcanal.
This project is set to revolutionise cocoa bean production in the region for exportation.
Mr Kokou announced this funding arrangement at the opening of his new cocoa warehouse at Tamboko in West Guadalcanal last week.
The primary focus of the project is to expand the Bonege and Vura Cocoa farms, paving the way for increased cocoa yield and export volumes.
Mr Kokou provided funding for food rations and fuel to transport workers and equipment needed for cocoa rehabilitation clearance work.
A dedicated team of about 10 workers, including chainsaw operators and crews, work diligently from Monday to Saturday to achieve the project’s objectives.
Following the clearing phase, the programme will progress to nursery activities, where farmers will have the opportunity to collect cocoa seedlings to plant in their own farms. This approach allows for a more sustainable and participatory process for the farmers involved.
Mr Kokou plans to expand the rehabilitation programme to include other cocoa farms in Guadalcanal and other provinces, with the initial focus in Bonege and Vura which will serve as a trial for farmer participation.
The main aim of the project is to improve the yield and quality of cocoa fruits, leading to higher export output.
Mr Kokou emphasised the importance of maintaining clean cocoa farms and that is it allows for better sunlight exposure and maximises fruit production.
He encouraged farmers to actively manage their farms, highlighting the significant role cocoa plays in their livelihoods.
With his extensive experience and expertise in the cocoa industry, Mr Kokou is dedicated to advancing cocoa production in the country. BK Cocoa Exporter is currently the leading cocoa exporter in the country, contributing significantly to the national cocoa industry and the national economy.
