Police are now ready to start using Breathalyzers this weekend following going through an extensive campaign of advising people about the implementation program under the new legislation.
Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast said the idea of the breathalyzers is not to catch people and not to raise revenue but is to change behaviour of people drinking and driving.
“I hope people take heed of this warning from me and not drink while driving, that is the best outcome for everyone.
“You will see that technology rolled out over the weekend.”
The police chief said the use of the breathalyzers does not mean police are stopping people to have a good time but are trying to stop people being killed.
“Go out and enjoy but if you drink, don’t drive and if you drive don’t drink.
“If you drink, get someone to drive for you or get a taxi.
Mr Prendergast said they are doing this to help reduce the number of deaths occurring as a result of drink and drive.
He added that Honiara town is not hard to make sure most drivers have to go past police checks at one point or another.
He said with the publicity done and the pamphlets in the paper and commentary about the Breathalyzer, it would be pretty silly to be caught.
“If you get caught drink driving during the weekend, then you deserve to be caught.
“We are hoping everyone can enjoy these national upcoming events and we are looking forward to ensuring doing our best that everyone can enjoy these events.”
