HAVE you ever thought of witnessing a shell-money festival right where this Malaitan traditional currency is produced – the Langa Langa Lagoon? The good news is, it is happening again this year after a four-year absence.
The Busu Cultural Centre which is regarded as the home of shell money will be hosting its 6th shell money festival this year.
The event, which has become an annual event since 2014, was not hosted in the past four years due to COVID-19.
Speaking to Solomon Star Auki yesterday, event organiser, Bernard Dakero, confirmed that the Busu Cultural Centre will be hosting its 6th Shell Money festival next month.
Mr Dakero said it will be a two-day event to be held from 18 to 19 August and will be packed with traditional activities.
He said the event will commence with a relaunching programme on the first day.
Activities organised for the first day include a cultural village tour, tabu site tour, shell-money making demo, bride-price ceremony, bride-price presentation, traditional fire-making method, local food preparation, fortune-telling, traditional healing process, sago palm leaf-sewing and cultural entertainment.
Activities for the second day of the event include artificial island building, canoe racing for both men and women, swimming race for both men and women and a dancing competition.
The closing ceremony to be held at the end of the second day and will see the presentation of prizes to winners of the competitions.
Mr Dakero said overseas and local guests will be part of the event.
