LANDOWNERS and Chiefs of Vanikoro Island in the Vatud Constituency, Temotu province have called on their Member of Parliament (MP) Freda Tuki for a negotiation to settle the current dispute on the Island.
The dispute referred to was in relation to the incident at Vanikoro that happened on Sunday, where villagers of Vanikoro allegedly ransacked a barge that was sent by the MP for development purposes.
This was for failing to listen to their orders. As a result, machines that were loaded in the barge were torched, and chainsaws plus a number of Outboard Motor (OBM) engines were looted.
“By now, the MP should realize that any proposed development on the Island will not prosper until this issue is settled.
“So, we are requesting a dialogue with her to sort out our differences.
“If Ms Tuki could make a visit to us at the Island, we would appreciate that and we hope she will accept our request,” Mr Tua said.
He added, while they appreciate the proposed development earmarked by their MP, they also want her to visit the chiefs there to create a common understanding to further develop the island and constituency.
“For any development to prosper, the process must go through the landowners first.
“So we are looking forward for her visit to the island so that development can take place on the island with no disputes,” Tua added.
Attempts to get comments from MP Tuki yesterday was unsuccessful. Calls to her mobile phone remain unanswered.
Comments will be sought from her today concerning the villagers’ idea for a suggested dialogue with her to settle the dispute.
