LANDOWNERS on Vanikoro, Temotu, have appealed to the national government to suspend a logging operation on the island, claiming overwhelming damages to the environment.
A spokesman for landowners, who asked not to be named for fear of job loss, said it was sad to see the damage the logging operation as caused to the island.
“I urged the new Temotu Province executive to re-impose the logging ban in the province,” he said from Lata by phone.
“I also called on the national government to seriously consider suspending the license of the company, Jayer Berya Limited,” he added.
The spokesman said the landowners are victims of an irresponsible decision by the Temotu provincial executive.
He said Vanikoro is a small Island and doesn’t need a logging.
Sawmilling is the best option for the island, he said.
Meanwhile former Premier Edward Daiwo had accused the last Fr Brown Beu executive of allow the logging on Vanikoro.
The Solomon Star documents that confirmed the logging company contributed $610,000.00 to the last provincial executive.
Mr Daiwo said despite the company’s contribution to the province, a new government should focus on developing tourism because logging is not development.
