A call has been made to activate sports on the Island of Ulawa in the Makira Ulawa Province.
Roxely Tara, a prominent member of the Makira Team in the recent Solomon Games made the call saying whilst there have been talks of the impressive sports performance in the recent Games there should be ongoing league and competition hosted annually.
He said in that way will see continuous active participation not only in football but in other sports as well.
Tara said the Member of Parliament for Ulawa Ugi, Honourable William Marau has shown he is prepared to support the activation of sports on the island.
“A lot has been said regarding the Team Makira at the recent Solomon Games 2016 in Honiara.
“Some have highly commended our football squad in making history in the senior level and its first time in the history of MUFA and of course SIFF in terms of winning all pools matches right through to grand final.
“What we are trying to put across here is to remind our responsible authorities for football, netball, athletics and so on to organize leagues or competitions for our young people on annual basis.
“We have resources available on Ulawa and of course good infrastructure in place to ease these activities.
“We have football venues and also other sports venues available.”
Tara added sports is a voluntarily task and needs commitment and patience and maybe rewarding if resources are there.
He calls on leaders of sports organisations on Ulawa to get together and organise sports for our young people on the Island.
“Appoint LOC and make a simple budget for our Hon. MP to assist our sports men and women.
“I believe Hon. Marau is keen and most willing to assist, since he has assisted our Team Makira during the SG 2016.
“I am 100% sure he will accept and assist your request.
“Let’s do something for our young people in sports,” he said.
