VEHICLE owners in West Kwaio and West Areare, Malaita Province are urging responsible authorities to build bridges over rivers along the South road in the vicinity of West Kwaio-West Areare.
They said that the safety of passengers and transport owners is vital because few rivers along the road starting from Su’u area to West Areare are without proper bridges far too long now.
“At times when there is heavy downpour it poses greater risk to the passengers and trucks as the rivers get flooded.
“Thats why we are calling on the responsible authority to intervene and build proper bridges,” they said.
A visit by the Solomon Star to West Areare last week has witnessed the situation and it’s an eyesore.
At Bira river in West Areare and Su’u river in West Kwaio vehicles have to cross the river.
So when it rains heavily, the river becomes flooded and vehicles have to wait until the water drops.
A transport owner he said that some of these rivers have been without a bridge for many years now.
“Our trucks usually cross the river and its affecting our vehicles and the general traveling public.
“So many times we have to wait until the water recedes before we could cross. In many cases it would take hours which causes frustration to our passengers because usually arrive late at their homes.”
The transport owner said given such situation government and responsible authorities should take note of such concern and build more bridges.
