A Honiara resident has urged the local fire fighter to be more alert and equipped in the event of a major fire disaster.
Ben Didiomea raised his concern after the Vuvula complex located at China Town in Honiara was razed to the ground on Saturday evening at around 4pm.
He said, according to his own observation, the fire fighters were very slow in the way they handled the burnt down the building.
“It is the duty of the fire fighters to remain alert and attend to any fire scene as soon as possible.”
Mr Didiomea said, the fire that caught Vuvula could have been stopped if the fire fighters arrived on the scene on time with proper equipment.
“The fire fighter who attended to the scene came an hour after the fire started and when they arrived at the scene it took them very long to setup and it was surprising that some of the people helping them were civilians and my question is where are the full fire fighter team?
“If the fire trucks that came to the scene are the only ones we have in the country at the moment then seriously we need more fire trucks to prepare for any unfortunate events as such,” he said.
He added that the fire fighters should just pump water from Mataniko River given that the late Vuvula building is just inches from the river to put the fire off.
Only one fire truck arrived soon after the fire started but could not do much.
